Wow! 1gb of memory! With that you could run OS X if you're not and supposedly one of its best innovations over OS 9 is an automatic memory allocation feature. OF course, something mysterious is going on and abandoning one OS for another is probably not the way to resolve what I hope will be a relatively straightforward troubleshooting issue.
