My IMac is having problems with a Canon C660U flatbed scanner
Haven't used the scanner due to lack of connectivity. Let me explain. The
Canon requires a powered (direct) feed from the iMac to ensure the
scanner operates.
Now the ideal method would be to have additional USB outlets. My iMac
 does not have Firewire.
I have two USB outlets, one goes to the Macally keyboard and then from that
to the Macally mouse. The other outlet goes to the printer.
Plugging the printer outlet into the other USB outlet on the keyboard creates
what might described in electrical terms as a ground loop, the computer can't
be turned off when I do turn it off.
Solution is to unplug the printer; an annoyance at the very least. and
then the computer may be turned off.

So what I need is a grown-up telephone jack splitter off one of the USB
outlets so I can plug the scanner in to same. I spoke with a friend and
he noted, many
outboard products require DIRECT connections to the motherboard. There
are only
so many outlets that are such! Grrrrrrrrrr!

Sounds simple eh?

NOT!

The three or four dealers I have dealt with have all suggested I purchase
a newer iMac with more USB outlets. Bastards!
Nary a one either carries a splitter device nor do they even carry
powered USB hubs. They all figure not, get a newer machine. Always
willing to make a sale, never willing to help one work through a
perplexing problem.

So is there a source for a powered hub (that will do as I require) or
even a basic
splitter here in Southern Ontario?

I did purchase a D-Link brand 4 port USB Hub a while back, and although

it uses a power cord and is supposedly powered, it won't power the
scanner; it also won't route the signal from the iMac to the printer!
 Given the low price
I really should not expect much. Sounds like another doorstop in the making.

Have looked at the various USB connection devices available in the

various retail outlets; it can't be that difficult to make my own
splitter if nothing else is available, is it?
