the iMac made a HUGE impact on apple's bottom line. The went from 
bleeding red ink like it was going out of style in 1997-1998, to having 
4B in the bank and consistently turning in profitable quarters ($40M 
this last quarter, slightly better than industry analysts expected).

Apple was losing lots of money way back when, but $2B/year sounds a 
little exaggerated. You'd have to go wading through SEC quarterly 
(and/or annual) filings to find the correct values.
