Actually, that's only part true. If you have Quicktime Pro, do the following:
1) Open the video using Quicktime Pro
2)Export the video into the DV format.
3) Save in DV format
4) Open iMovie and select "new"
5)Place new video in DV format into the new project's folder

It works!
