It sounds to me like the permissions on your hard drive have changed somehow. In the 
Show Info window's "Permissions" pane, what does it say?

It should say Owner: system   Group: admin
Owner: Read & Write
Group: Read & Write
Everyone: Read Only
(these should all be grayed, not changeable in this window)

If yours varies (especially in the Group permission, perhaps saying "Read Only"), then 
you'll probably have to go into Terminal to fix it.....
