I use generic ink carts from ink4art.com and TDCurran.com in my Epson 740i exclusively with no problems. For the price of one black Epson-branded cartridge, you can get FIVE black cartridges from ink4art.com, especially if they have a coupon promotion going on (color cartridges are slightly more expensive).
Quick plug: try using www.inkfinder.com to find carts for your printer at the lowest price. And yes, it is true that newer carts for newer printers from Epson, HP, and Lexmark have proprietary computer chips embedded in them, and if the cart doesn't have the chip, the printer will refuse to accept the cart--and these carts can't be refilled and/or recycled. Sneaky. There was an article on Yahoo! news about this a few weeks ago, as several states are considering suing the big printer makers for forcing users to buy their carts. They sell a printer for $50, and then make the user buy carts at $30-$40 bucks a pop. From the state attorney generals' points of view, it's an unfair business practice, as it's driving small business (recyclers and 3rd party vendors) out of business. So, you *can* use generic carts, but it depends upon your printer make and model. Matt -- Matthew W.
