You said your problem stopped when you chose Factory Settings, but mine
stopped for a week or more when I didn't change any settings!

Today my iMac changed its aspect ratio a few times, but the changes were
minor and didn't affect my work.

I really doubt that this problem has anything to do with software settings.
I think we both have an intermittent hardware problem with the display
circuitry.  I don't have Apple Care, and you're right -- repair could be
expensive, not because the part is expensive or that the repair would be
difficult once the cause of the trouble was found, but rather because a
technician's time to isolate a faulty component can add up if he hasn't
seen the problem before and if the problem is highly intermittent.  I agree
with the Appletechs that taking the machine in for repair (when it is
acting up consistently) is the only way to get it fixed.
