I have a Rev. B iMac with just this arrangement. I have replaced the
original ATA cable for the hard drive with a long master/slave cable.
The master is my internal 40 GB (replacement) drive and I have run
the long end out the back of my iMac to the external hard drive and
use an external power supply to supply it. Being ata, one must always
have the slave powered up and connected at boot and this way I can
choose which hard drive I wish to use or none at all for each given
session. This also saves on the cost of an external Firewire or USB
case.
