Actually, that's half the story. Helvetica has been around for decades, the
PostScript version  was one of the original LaserWriter fonts. It was on
Macs (first as a bitmap screen font, alter ATM) from the early 80s. Later
when Apple and MS didn't want to pay Adobe for ATM to rasterise fonts they
made Royal/Truetype and cloned the original Adobe PS fonts; and so Arial
was born and bundled with Mac OS and Windows, creating a nightmare for DTP
that has never ended.
