Hi all, - There seems to be a lot less traffic here than in the ibook list where I have been lurking on and off for the last twelve months. Maybe less off topic rants and flames?
I have spent the last few weeks considering the requirements in our home for computers, the 165powerbook just wont cut the mustard any more, and I have just ordered the 17inch imac from the uni IT shop, hope it'll be in by the end of the month. Mostly it is because my partner will be needing to use it a great deal to work on her thesis, but I am getting a strong case of apple lust and just love the innovative design of the new imac. I am extremely pleased with the performance of my ibook and OS X so its just deeper into mac territory for me. :) I figure on having the ibook portability, connected to the airport network, printing available to a laserjet (probably a 2nd hand HP) thru the imac wirelessly. Has anyone got a similar set up? Do I use ethernet or usb to connect the imac to a laserjet? - does it matter? I dont have any experience with this as this 1-year-old ibook has been my first foray into the computing world for 15yrs. The imac's G4 should offer a better experience using some of the software, illustrator, logic audio, which get a little cramped on the ibook. <I must say tho' that I love the way when the audio program overloads the ibook's processor it just pops up a message saying 'system overload' - but doesn't crash! From my experiences of pc land this is quite miraculous!> Will the wireless printing thru the imac be in the appleshare realm? Again I have no experience. Does it still work if the imac is in sleep mode? Any comments and tips, opinions appreciated. I cant really justify the stretch to a powermac G4 at this point - or should I consider it? I expect that the market will continue to evolve and I dont expect to get into video for a few years but I'd like to dabble in music production, which I've not done since my teens with a Spectra, c1987. I note the imac doesn't have a mic in and will - like the ibook - require me to get a usb mic and usb to midi. Does anyone on this list use a usb mic/midi settup?
