Nothing is a 100% sure except the good old sledge hammer. Since 
reasonable sized (20 GB) ATA/IDE dri8ves are so inexpensive nowadays, 
complete piece of mind is just pull the old HD, and stick in a new one 
before selling or donating the old computer.

Load whatever software you want to include on the new HD and you're all 
set.
