Jack, Thanks. If my hopeful thought didn't pan out, I had somewhat "planned" to buy an external HD, and swap actual HDs (put the current HD in the external case, and put the new HD inside the iMac (DV SE 400MHz slot loader with FireWire) and install 10.2 on the new one.

All the methods I know of require erasing the HD to partition it. Buy, borrow or beg a removable HD, USB or Firewire (you didn't say which iMac you have) download all your existing files, reformat and partition the HD, and reinstall.
