Just a little background that goes some ways toward explaining the dichotomy
of Apple specifying a certain amount of RAM, and then later someone finds
that a given machine actually can use more...

Came across this issue back in the 68040 days on Dan's original Quad-List.
Many of you who are familiar with Quad-List may recall the RAM issue popping
up occasionally. When Apple first builds a product, like the iMac DV, and
the important point here is when Apple "first" builds a product, they will
test it with the largest RAM modules that exist at that time, and then
certify the product for that amount of RAM, assuming that the machine can
handle that amount of RAM. Now, time goes by and RAM cards now hold more
and more RAM. So, the card size that once held only 128M of RAM (two of
these in the DV equates to 256M) now can hold 512M (two of which in the DV
equates to 1G+). But does Apple go back and retest or recertify the machine
for this higher amount of RAM? No, it doesn't. And historically it never
has (going out on a limb saying that it never has, but to my knowledge I
haven't seen where Apple has done this). So, we end up with a machine that
can in actuality support 1G of RAM, but Apple's documentation never catches
up and the true capability is never documented officially. Thus, suppliers
like CompUSA and most others will maintain that the only level supported is
the old, initial, and only level originally published by Apple.

Sometimes, it is the case that the OS will only support RAM up to a given
amount. I think, and this is really going out on the ol' limb, that OS 9
only supports up to 1G of RAM? I know that there were some limits
associated with the old Quad machines and OS 8 and before.

I never thought about that one so I looked it up on Apple's Knowledge
Base. The maximum allowed is 256 mgs. As to why? Because... ;)
