No, you don't have to do it. The firmware is a EPROM chip, IIRC. 
(Isn't it like the BIOS chip in a PC?) What I haven't understood is 
WHY it has to be done at all. I think the iMac is the only system 
that requires it (I don't have a tower, Ti-book or ibook, so I may be 
wrong); I never had to do it with any of my previous Macs. It seems 
that Apple is getting more & more PC-like with patches for this, 
security updates for that, etc.
