Well.

After lots of research, i downloaded Xray and BATchmod to see if either would
help me with the "HD cannot be modified" problem I was having (i.e., lost
permissions, privileges). Xray wouldn't open at all (error message appeared),
but BATchmod DID THE TRICK!!!!! No more problem!!!!

Is there anything else I can do to check and clean up my
drives/files/directories, etc., etc.

in the good ole days (OS 8.5), I rebuilt the desktop from time to time but
have no idea if that is even an option any more.

Also via HD/APPS/UTILITIES/DISK UTILITY doesn't seem to provide access to
functional disk utility (everything is grayed out)--why is that? What to do?

thanks to all for your patience with someone who used to kind of be able to
take care of things a bit better in his Pre-OSX life,

Dale
