We choose external so we could share it between three computers, a pumped up
Power Computing unit running OS X, the kid's slot loading, 350 mHz iMac, and
wincrap box. (the other computer here, G4 tower has a built in CD RW). After
looking at various reviews, and talking to friends, we purchased one OWC's
Mercury combo units, 40x12x48 along with a full copy of Toast Titanium.
OWC stock number OWCMRFWU2540E , $219.00 at the time we bought it.
We've been very pleased. Runs with firewire off the PTP, and USB off the iMac
and the wincrap box.. Burn times are very satisfactory. Works with iTunes and
Toast for music with firewire equipped PTP. On the iMac with USB it works under
Toast. Works with Apple's disc copy on both.
On the wincrap box, I use CeQuadrajet "Just Burn" to run it with USB.
Consistently about 50% slower, at the same burn speeds than Toast on the iMac.
I was too cheap to also buy a windows version of Toast. <G>
For us external has been a good solution.
