If your progress bar did actually reach the end, then the firmware update should have installed correctly. I suppose it *is* possible for a firmware update to be interrupted (by, for example, a power burp) and go awry, and perhaps that is what happened in your case.
My thoughts when I originally read your post was that your video board has a problem and went belly-up after the firmware update, but not BECAUSE of it. I should have approached your problem with more humility and tact. I assume you've tried resetting the PRAM settings on the machine? When you turn it on, do you get the familiar "BONG" noise? Anything at all? Does it sound like the HD is being accessed, you just can't see it? _Chas_ Come to ...
