1. Make a backup. It's unlikely anything bad will happen, but it's
ALWAYS a good idea to have a backup before doing something major like
this.

2. If you are in the middle of a paying or time-sensitive project,
FINISH IT FIRST.

3. Assuming you are ready to proceed ... update your OS 9 (if you have
that) to the latest version, 9.2.2.

4. Run the installer.

5. I suggest doing a "custom install," selecting "Archive and Install"
and unclicking any printer drivers and languages you are sure you won't
be using.

6. Follow the directions and read the license.

7. Be patient. The whole process may take up to an hour!

8. Reboot and have fun!

Extremely unlikely, but make a backup! You should be doing this anyway!

The "Archive and Install" option I spoke of will do a "clean install"
but will preserve your user settings (such as internet stuff, passwords
etc). It will move your "old" system folder to the side but will NOT
throw anything away, so in case there is any problem you can locate the
"old" bit you need or even "roll back" to 10.1.5 without pain.

If you mean Mail.app, it has been vastly improved -- but no you won't
lose any of your email or settings or anything.
