AFAIK, you can't. DVD Playback doesn't only require a DVD capable 
drive, it requires a video card with MPEG-2 decoding (even "software" 
decoding players need specific graphics cards to work; replace a DV 
iMac's logic board with a non-DV logic board, and you'll find that DVD 
Player stops working, even though it's a "software" decoding machine).

iDVD only works with Apple's internal SuperDrives. I think I've seen 
hacks around the net to work iDVD with external drives, but I don't 
recall where and am always dubious of "hacks". DVD Studio Pro works 
with external drives.
