Because you have not yet set up a mail filter to catch those messages and
mark them as read and move them to your mail program's "deleted items"
folder?

Smart-ass mode off, everyone (or at least a lot of people) gets those
messages when they post, and there's nothing we can do about it.  Be
patient, someday we will have a new mailing list server.  In the meantime,
just delete the confirmation messages, or set up a filter/rule to delete
them for you.

It's been my experience that they always have the same number in the
subject, so it's easy to set up a filter by subject.
