To repeat myself - BACKUP! First, there's the old chestnut about hard disk failure - there's only two kinds of people in the world, those who've suffered a hard disk failure, and those who will. So, if you've got any data that you don't have backed up... BACK IT UP TODAY! As to the specific question, there's not all that much you can do after the fact. You can always try a copy of Norton Utilities and use Unerase to try and recover some files from the disk. This is assuming that the disk will mount. I'm sure there are similar programs out there, as well. If the disk is really toast (won't mount no matter what efforts you make), then no, there aren't any *cheap* alternatives that I'm aware of. DriveSavers <http://www.drivesavers.com/> can probably recover your data, but as far as I know, they're not cheap - in fact, they don't have pricing on their web site, and they're largely used by businesses for really crucial data. The best bet? Always back up. Always. Be obsessive about it. It's by far the cheapest data recovery option. After that, the options get more expensive and less successful. Unfortunately, Dave, that doesn't help you that much. I'd try Norton or something similar if possible. After that you have to decide just how much money that 8 GBs of data is worth.
