Jerry, I think you're thinking of OS 9 or earlier, although I may be 
mistaken. In OS X, I use the "Login Items" panel in "System 
Preferences". Here you'll see an "Add" button, which when clicked 
brings up a navigation window to select the app you want to start 
automatically at login.

Also, I don't think it's been mentioned in this thread yet, but another 
way to keep an item in the dock is that once it's running, click and 
hold the icon in the dock and it brings up a little menu where you can 
select to "Keep in Dock".
