Hi Rich,

This would certainly be worth the money in my opinion. For now it would
be perfect for backups. If more space is needed you just replace the
drive in the enclorure for a bigger one.

Daniel

Subject: External Drives

Hi Listers,

Has anyone had any experience with "roll-your-own" external firewire
drives?

More specifically, I'm in the process of upgrading from a beige G3. A
couple of years I ago I added a 13 GB Maxtor DiamondMax (Plus, I think)
7200 RPM to the G3 when I started filling the stock 4 GB. I'm planning
on selling the G3 to offset the cost of this spiffy new iMac, but I
never got around to buying a sled for the new drive. I was thinking
that if I dropped it into an external Firewire enclosure I'd have a
nice place to keep backups, etc.

Anyone have experience with this? I'm on a tight budget, but I have
seen some enclosures for less than $50. Is it worth it, or should I
just save up for an enclosure with an included (larger) drive? Is it
reasonably easy to install in the enclosure (I have upgraded components
in a number of systems, so I am familiar with some of the work that I'd
probably have to do, but I'd like to be sure)? Any advice?

Thanks,
Rich

On another note: Right on! (see below)
