"Basically, make sure that the new drive is at least 5400 rpm (7200 rpm is better) and will work on the bus speed of the iMac (66 MHz, IIRC). Drives that list a higher bus speed should work but I don't know about lower bus speed drives. Go for the largest capacity that you can afford, but remember that you will have to create a First partition no larger than 8 GB for the system folder because the Rev B won't recognize a system on a larger partition/drive.
............... I am shortly to upgrade my Bondi Blue with new hard drive and extra ram. I would like a large, (80 gb +,) fast (7200 RPM) drive, but have seen some references to excess heat from these drives.
eg MacWorld
"What You'll Need
Here's a rundown of the supplies necessary to upgrade an iMac.
1. A 5,400-rpm ATA or Ultra ATA hard drive (faster drives may be too hot for iMacs)."
................ Does anybody have one of these fast drives in this or similar iMac? Is heat a problem?
What brand/s is/are recommended? (Surprised to see what I have seen re Deskstars!)
Thanks in advance,
Stuart.
