No, not really. Despite the hierarchical-sounding names, "master" and
"slave" drives are treated equally in almost all respects as far as the
hardware channel is concerned. In fact, the IDE/ATA standard really talks
about device "0" and device "1". The only differences are housekeeping
aspects that the OS might manage (for example, if no startup disk is
specified the OS might check drive 0 (master) first and drive 1 (slave)
second).

The best (and basically only) optimization you can do for IDE/ATA drives
is to put them on a separate channel (i.e., no "slave" on that channel).
However, that obviously requires a sufficient number of channels. :/

Beyond that, there may be some slight advantage in how you pair devices
on multiple channels--depending how you use them. Pairing fast hard
drives with rarely-used devices can effectively give the fast hard
drives their own channel--at least most of the time. Also, certain
ATAPI devices (like CD/DVD drives) can tie up a lot of bandwidth due to
their relatively slow speeds and complicated command protocols--at least
when they're in use. So it might be best if heavily-used CD/DVD drives
were not paired with fast hard drives; etc.
