I recently lost an Apple Pro mouse to this same problem. I could see the frayed wires by the mouse. I'm not in a school setting, but do have children who use the computer a lot. I replaced it with a $6 clearance XLR8 mouse, which seems to have a much thicker or stiffer cord, and now I'm addicted to the two-button and scroll-wheel features.
