I recently lost an Apple Pro mouse to this same problem. I could see
the frayed wires by the mouse. I'm not in a school setting, but do have
children who use the computer a lot.

I replaced it with a $6 clearance XLR8 mouse, which seems to have
a much thicker or stiffer cord, and now I'm addicted to the two-button
and scroll-wheel features. I now would never go back to an Apple Pro
mouse, although the optical feature beats the little ball hands down.
