late again... >> I am very sick of continually getting the following error message: > "Your internet connection was disconnected because of no response from > the other side. Please try again." > > I have a flat panel 15" imac, 800, combo drive > OSX 10.1.5 > Using IE 5.1 > Earthlink >
I had exactly the same problem with an identical iMac on this side of the Atlantic. The majority of connections would terminate with the above message within the first two to three minutes of the connection being established. This was using a telephone line which had performed faultlessly for the previous three years. I should also state that using non-Apple computers on the same telephone line gave me rock-solid connections. The only documentation relating to the problem I could find anywhere was an AppleCare article that claimed that it was due to certain connection equipment in use at the ISP end. This was subsequently amended to claim that the problem only existed with a certain ISP. Apart from lowering the connection speed, I could find no other solution. Then, voila, the problem disappeared. What did I do to achieve this miracle? I upgraded to 10.2! I noted that there had been some minor changes made to the modem scripts but have never seen any official acknowledgement that the problem ever existed. I cannot guarantee (obviously) that upgrading to 10.2 will solve your problem but it certainly worked for me.<< ---------------------------- At some point in time, Apple fessed-up and admitted that they had modem script problems that began back in OS 9. Their initial "fix" was for users to select the v.34 modem script from the modem control panel, but of course this causes your modem speed to max out at 28.8 or 33.6 kbps. OS 10.2 is reported to have fixed this better, as the above writer notes. Jerry -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
