Welcome!

The RAM you were about to purchase would probably have worked fine, but
for safety's sake I always buy my RAM from mail-order dealers who are
known to be Mac-friendly. I broke my own rule and got some
ludicrously-cheap RAM at OfficeMax once ... guess what. Put it in and
my iMac became flaky as hell. Took it out and everything worked
perfectly.

My two favourite RAM dealers are OWC (Other World Computing) and
1-800-4-MEMORY, though I have heard nice things about other dealers
too. If smalldog.com sells RAM at a comparable price, you should
support them because they support this list!

For the record, all G3 iMacs from 350MHz up take the same type of RAM
-- 64x64 PC100 (or PC133) 168-pin SDRAM. When buying RAM from an
unfamiliar dealer, you want to make sure it's 7ns (nanosecond) or
lower, and make SURE it's CL2 (I assume that means cache level 2) --
CL3 does not work in Macs, and is inferior RAM generally anyway.

With the price of 512MB of RAM for you machine hovering around $50, I'd
spring for that if I were you. You were going to pay nearly $40 for
256MB, so why not the best?
