Sometimes(rarely, though) it is a self-extracting file that you can open
with Stuffit. 

Usually stuff like that is either a) a Windows virus that won't bite your
Mac or b) some silly thing that you would rather you don't know anyway.

In short. If stuffit doesn't open it, don't bother ;-)
