Hi All, A friend of mine sent me his iMac DV/400/OS 9.03 (the one with two FireWire ports) because he was no longer able to connect to his cable internet service in Florida. I had tried to talk him through the usual procedures (rebooting, throwing out preferences, zapping PRAM multiple times, etc.) over the phone with no joy.
The machine boots fine, but when you check the TCP/IP settings you always get an IP address that starts with 169, which I know is bogus. All our IP addresses on Optimum Online here in NY start with a 24. After doing a clean install from the restore disks, I am still experiencing the same issue; an IP address that starts with 169, and no connection to the internet, so I am assuming the ethernet port is dead. I have tried everything. Swapping ethernet cables, etc, etc. With many PCs that I work on that don't have ethernet ports, I often use a USB to Ethenet adapter made by Belkin with good results. See this ridiculously long URL: <http://catalog.belkin.com/ IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=2018&pcount=&Product_Id =104991&Section.Section_Path=%2FRoot%2FNetworki%2E%2E%2EndCables%2FNetwo rkI%2E%2E%2EaceCards%2F> This item works fine with PCs, but of course there are no Mac drivers. Now, short of buying a new motherboard, which are hard to find and *very* expensive when you can, I would love to find one of theses USB to ethernet adapters that works with a Mac. I have not been able to find one yet, but I thought I'd call on the wisdom of this list for help. In lieu of that, does anyone know where I can get a replacement motherboard? TIA for any and all help! Alex -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
