Well, I've used fsck quite a few times as I'm tinkering around Jaguar's
edges, and on various occasions it did carry out repairs to directories.
Maybe it would have done it all the same 'under the hood' even if I hadn't
called it up, of course. But it did seem to be doing something nevertheless.

Re speed in general: I threw out lots of Fonts that were stored in the
Library folder. It's down to 19 from the original 50 or so. I remember this
used to be recommended under previous OS versions as a way of improving
launching speed etc. Launching Word and other applications now takes half
the time than with the default array of fonts that the Jaguar installer had
chucked in - this is of course on a low end machine.

I've ordered the David Pogue OS X missing manual book, by the way. A Jaguar
edition was published a couple of months ago. Can't wait to get it and start
mucking about with things...

Thanks, Jacques, for your replies.

Btw, one of the changes that surprised me as compared to OS 9:
shift-clicking now selects consecutive items/icons, command-clicking selects
non-consecutive items/icons. in a Finder list. Cute, isn't it.
