this is bad news in-and-of itself. You should never let hard drive 
space dip below your hard drive's free space, even if you don't have 
virtual memory turned on.

Defragging might help a little, but until you free up more hard drive 
space, you're probably going to be having problems doing multimedia 
(video/sound) and graphics applications like PageMaker. Apps like PM 
and Photoshop create swap files on the hard drive while they're 
running, and that's cutting into your free space even further.
