I don't think Apple's swap area was ever meant to be on separate partitions. Could you point us to any knowledgeable information that Apple's VM-implementation should rely on a partitioning scheme with a dedicated swap partition? I am fully aware that Linux and *nixes often recommend you to have separate swap areas, but when you cannot repartition with pdisk or smitty or whatever, it is more waste of hard drive space. And as you note yourself, your partition is far too small for OSX, and the ideal for you would probably be to move your swap area back on the main disk, where you have room for it.
