<http://www.emusic.com/> supports the Macintosh (through a secondary partner.)

I'm a satisfied customer, that's my only affiliation.

EMusic is a revolutionary new music discovery service that offers an
easy and inexpensive way for avid music fans to download and enjoy
over 200,000 high-quality MP3 songs from established musicians. For
as little as $9.99 a month, you can download as much music as you
desire from EMusic's catalog. All of the music is legitimately
licensed from record labels and artists, so you can feel comfortable
knowing that songwriters, musicians and other copyright-holders are
being fairly compensated for their work.

They have a 14 day/50 MP3 free trial period so you can try it out.

All of the songs that I've downloaded have been 128 bit encoded MP3s
that play quite nicely in iTunes.

You notably will NOT find Brittany Spears (or other BS style stuff.)
But you will find a great collection of electronic music (Trance,
IDM, etc.) and a pretty good collection of jazz. That's where most
of my downloads fall. I don't know how the other Genres are
represented. But you can search for free to see what they have
before you sign up.

And if you have iTunes Scripts (available here:
<http://www.apple.com/applescript/itunes/>) you can initiate an
emusic search without leaving iTunes.
