There's two options. A complete external firewire drive, or just an 
external case and he installs the HD of his choice. If he needs huge 
amounts of storage? Granite digital makes a very slick system where 
they have a sub case the HD fits into and that then plugs into the 
external drive case, giving you the ability to have one external drive 
case you can plug any number of drives into. Serious storage. I case, 
5, 10, 20 or ? 80 Gig or larger drives. <G>

In the 40-100 GB range there's a veritable plethora of competing 
vendors. One make or the other is almost always on sale. Start watching 
the Mac resellers web sites.

OS X handles firewire external HD's great.
