I think you mean the control panel "Multiple Users" which MUST be 
enabled even if you are the only user (the extension "Multi-User 
Startup" can be safely disabled. You are right that disabling "Multiple 
Users" has been found to be the root cause of a number of OS 9 problems.

So if anyone reading this is an OS 9 user with sleep problems, try 
ENABLING the control panel "Multiple Users," restart the machine and 
see if that solves the problem. And let us know!!
