Not sure what you mean by low-end since the scale of scanner costs is wide. I use an Epson Perfection 1650 which has an excellent performance with OS X. The software provides a useful direct-copy-to-printer capability as well as a competent OCR. Cost in UK about �130 - say $170. In passing I would add that my Epson Stylus Photo 890 printer has some defects in its relationship to OS X and I have a feeling that Epson have not really folded OS X fully into their printer software.
