FWIW, a drive cannot be partitioned with Apple's drive set-up s/w without being erased 
and re-formatted. But the FWB ToolKit mentioned above does offer the ability to create 
partitions (and change the size of existing ones) without re-formatting. That being 
said, I wouldn't trust it, myself, but would use Apple's method, as Mark has 
recommended.
