Hi, George. You'll probably get a lot of different responses to this one; here's mine, which is just a very humble opinion. Around Christmas, my son bought a Sony DCR-TRV340 with a dynamite accessory package for the low end of your price range -- just a bit over $800. He got it at either Circuit City or Best Buy, I can't remember which. Anyhow, it's a terrific camera, with all necessary features including pass-thru. The accessories included an extra battery, camera case, tripod, a larger-capacity memory stick, 3 extra mini-dv tapes, and at least 2 extra lenses (telephoto, wide angle); there might have been additional trinkets also which I can't remember. I think the camera alone is around $500-$550, but the accessories are essential. Some of the other Sonys don't have the pass-thru feature, so look for it when you check them out. The controls are very handy to use, the LCD screen is a nice size, and the resolution for still pics is very good. It took a great movie outside at night with almost no light. The stills get recorded onto the memory stick and the movies onto the dv tapes. iPhoto and iMovie had no trouble with either media on our iBook/700/384RAM/Jaguar with usb and firewire, and we didn't even download the software that came with the camera. It's definitely a camera in your price range worth checking out. There might be equals, but I don't think you'll get a better or more convenient camera for less than $1200.
