You've been fed some misinformation. I've had to make exactly ONE adjustment to the stock iMovie3 to make it work exactly as I want to (I turned off the behaviour that applies the Ken Burns Effect to ANY photograph by default; this resulted in a big speedup). I use iMovie3 daily and would never even consider moving back to iMovie2. Most of the reports I've read about problems with iMovie3 result from people either a) not reading the manual to discover the changes or b) annoyance with the Ken Burns Effect being applied by default, which slows things up terribly. You can find the hint on how to modify the Ken Burns Effect to only work when specifically chosen by visiting macosxhints.com.
