reading the 'man' page would be a good start to learn about -all- of the features of 
'ftp' or any other command-line application.

in this case, type 'man ftp'

as with anything, there's always more than one way to skin a cat. i prefer using '!' 
to invoke a local shell, doing my deeds, then 'exit' to move back in to the FTP prompt.
