Thank you. Not sure but it may be a "versions" issue? If your AW6 is an older edition, and the MS word is a new edition it may be nothing more than a compatibility issue? Apple has an AW6 update available as a free download. If you have not installed that yet? You might want to do that then try opening the word document again.
The other option would be using MacLink to convert the Word doc to a different format. Not a free solution, but a great tool. It's one of those pieces of software that every Apple owner should have if you receive a lot of outside documents. Over the years MacLink has bailed me a lot of times. NFI, etc., etc..
