Thanks for your help. I agree that the salient points are:

  1) What quanitifies "slow"? Is "Slow" comparing USB 1.1 to SCSI-2? USB
to Parallel (though I'm thinking that parallel is not a currently -- if
ever -- popular scanner connectivity option with Macs).

  2) What kind of support are we looking at... what OS are you looking to
do most of your work in? If Jaguar, then those drivers (and support) are
most important

I have to admit that even with the extraordinary deal I've seen on Epson, I
am leaning toward the LiDE 30 because:
   1) I hate "spongy buttons" -- those buttons with the texture and feel of
stiff jello. My experience is that the print wears off of them... I think
the Epson has these.
   2) Bus-powered means no #$%^& annoying wall-wart transformer to deal
with. For use with a powered laptop, this is great. Less cords = less
hassle.
   3) I'm taken with the thought of a scanner with an adjustable lid (ie,
you can scan a 2" book without fear that you're stressing the hinges).

Thanks for your help. Your personal vignettes, shared online and off, were
also very helpful.
