Today I was attempting to backup my wife's iMac DV to an external Firewire
hard drive when I got a kernel panic. I rebooted without unplugging the FW
drive and got a kernel panic again. I rebooted again with the FW drive
turned off and then remounted the Firewire drive to check it in Disk
Utility. I got another kernel panic just as a Disk First Aid scan was
completing.
Here's some info about the iMac DV:
iMac DV "Snow" 500
slot-loading DVD
OS X 10.1.5
512 (or more) memory
The hard drive is from OWC and has the Oxford 911 bridge in it.
I have been using this FW drive for quite some time for occasional backups
and have had no problems. The iMac has *never* had a kernel panic prior to
this. My conclusion is that there is something different about the drive,
possibly the 10+ Gb backup file, that is causing the problem.
I mounted the drive on my Beige G3 with 10.2.4 with no problem. Disk First
Aid says it has no problems.
My secondary, but tentative, conclusion is that it's a bug with 10.1.5. I'd
upgrade her to 10.2.4, but she hates when I upgrade her OS. "It always
messes everything up." This is true, to some degree, since I know that the
10.2 installer deletes all the installed printers. Also, I don't like
upgrading the OS without a backup (remember I can't backup because of this
problem).
So I guess my question for the list is, has anyone else seen kernel panics
related to FW drives? Is there something I can do to fix the problem that
doesn't involve installing OS 10.2?
