Yes, but it's not intended to handle "complex" formatting like tables. Appleworks can handle straight MS Word files without having to convert them to RTF format, and this seems to help (though complex formatting still "breaks" sometimes). From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (CP Jacobs) Subject: Is AppleWorks 6.x worth it?
I'm using AW 5.0.4 on my iMac (400 MHz, System 9.1). It does just about
everything I need. However, I am not impressed with importing RTF files
that were created with M$ Word (Mac or Windows): files with tables do not
import correctly, among other minor formatting errors (like a 10 page
document being converted to a 60 page document, with page breaks after
every two or three lines). Isn't RTF supposed to be a "universal" format?
Anyway, I'm considering AW 6.x, mostly for its ability to read and write M$
office files. What's the list's opinion about AW 6.x? How does it compare
to AW 5? And, lastly, how good are the M$ converters?
It's pretty much the same translators, licensed from MacLink. Once AppleWorks got to 6.2.x I started recommending it again, it's a very good program well worth the money.
However, if you're routinely handling documents from Word users I might suggest to you that ThinkFree Office is a stronger option. It's $50 and handles 95% of whatever MS Office can throw at it. It even handles "version tracking," something I've not seen any other Office wannabe do.
It is slower than MS Office, being all Java, but I've very successfully used it to open Word, Excel and Powerpoint presentations that AppleWorks choked on. All documents created by ThinkFree are seamlessly openable in PC Word/Excel/PP, and so far it seems that vice versa is true as well. You can try a 30-day free demo from thinkfree.com.
I'm not a shill, just a satisfied customer.

Claiming that the Macintosh is inferior to Windows because most people use Windows is like saying that all other restaurants are inferior to McDonald's.
