How in the world did you miss out on this little tidbit? We've known
since before the Public Beta shipped that OS X was going to be BSD Unix
with a Mac-like interface -- basically the old NeXT operating system made
a bit more like the Mac (but not enough like the Mac to make it easy for
OS 9 users to migrate without a lot of headaches).

And please don't even start on the "OS X is not the Mac OS" thread. That
is grounds for banishment from the list.

OS X is a new Mac OS, but it is absolutely a Mac OS since it only runs on
Macs and is made by Apple, who makes the Mac and decides what can and
cannot be called a Mac OS. It's a different Mac OS -- superior in some
ways, inferior in others -- but please don't try to compare it with *the*
Mac OS.

The classic Mac OS was never complicated to fix or repair, but that's
mostly because we used Disk First Aid, Conflict Catcher, Norton (before
we knew better), DiskWarrior, and other programs to do most of the work
for us. Similar tools are becoming available for OS X.

Of course, I've never had to do the kind of repairs to any machine
running OS X that I used to deal with regularly under the classic Mac OS.
No damaged Finder preferences. No corrupt System file. No extension
conflicts.

OS X is far from perfect and far from finished. Still, it's good enough
to have displaced the classic Mac OS for over 2 million Mac users who are
switching to it each year -- and that's not counting those who get it
free with their new computers.
