iMac dvse 400 won't stay on

Just wondering if you might have any insight on my iMac problem. Its 
been sitting for over a  year. Thought it was dead but the decided to 
replace  the hard drive. I put a 40GB in w/ os9 on it. It starts up all 
the way, then dies shortly after. Then won't do it again until at least 
10 minutes Has new pram battery.
Any suggestion would be appreciated.
