Not anytime soon.


In all sincerity, despite Apple's obvious enthusiasm for the chip I wouldn't expect to see a G5 iMac before another 9 to 12 months have gone by at the earliest.

But there is good news in this ... since the G4s are demonstrably slower than the G5s at the same clock speed, we're likely to see a big speed bump in the iMacs between now and then. It's also quite possible that Apple will incorporate some of the new technology we saw in the G5 (such as hypertransport and the new ASIC and serial ATA) into future revisions of the iMac.

But I expect the iMac (a consumer machine) to remain a G4 for a good while yet.
