Space, envelope and maintaining design integrity. Since FP iMac is a "consumer" Mac, the 640 "easy install" was considered plenty of memory. Think of it as a desktop interpretation of a PowerBook. The envelop will always impose upgrade constraints.
I doubt that was a consideration at all in 2001 when the design was finalized. Easy expandability was not a criteria for the Flat panel iMac.I currently have a 128 MB internal chip and a 256 MB user slot chip. So, I can only upgrade to 640 MB instead of 768 MB through the user slot. Sounds like a cheap way to get people to come into the Apple $tore$ and spend money for them to upgrade your machine.
My guess would be no. None of the memory vendors indicate an "actual capacity" of over 1 gig. I'm sure, if they knew it would take more, they would indicate it, so they could sell more memory.
This is why I asked question #1. Can I cheat around this 640 MB ceiling?
