Under System Preferences, you should see an icon of a lightbulb, this Energy Saver. It is listed in the Hardware section. I believe it is the third row down.

It will sleep if I select that under the Apple menu, but if I walk away for 20 minutes only the screen is dark and of course the fan is running. It is currently running X.2.6. Yes, I've read the comments about "don't sleep your computer" and "that's the number-one cause of problems" but sleep actually does work for most people. This has just happened recently after over a year of use, and I also have three powerbooks at home that are always left to sleep.
